DETAILS
For the past several years I have been an active participant at the Truckee Thursday Street Fair. Every Thursday during the summer thousands of people descend on downtown Truckee, CA for art, food music and fun. As a vendor it is an insane amount of work fit into 6 short hours. The payoff is I get to share my art with more people in 4 hours of active show time than I sometimes meet at a three day art festival.

I usually leave home by 1pm and head over the summit of the Sierra. My rig, with art show trailer in tow, makes its way up Hwy 20 to 80 East. The mountain views along this scenic stretch are amazing. At old Hwy 40 I exit and head past Sugarbowl Ski resort and stop just above the Rainbow Bridge to take a relaxing stroll along the Pacific Crest Trail. The iconic Rainbow Bridge with Donner Lake seen below is one of the most photographed sites in the Lake Tahoe area. I have wanted to paint this view for a long time and my spot was pre-determined from my pre show observations.

In May a few years ago a storm was brewing so I grabbed my large canvas and headed to Donner Pass. I wanted to capture the storm energy in paint. As I set up my canvas along old Hwy 40 the wind was whirling around me. Knowing I was battling the elements, brush strokes of paint whipped onto the canvas capturing the storms fury. Swoosh the wind caught my canvas and over it toppled. Swoosh again and over it toppled. This did not deter the mad artist. Van Gogh would have been proud of me. For the final test the wind driven hail forced me to hastily retreat. Two weeks later I returned on a much calmer day. The red Jeep passed by and the Snow geese flew through the scene. The Result: Donner Pass 48”x48” Oil on Canvas
